Well, I always believed it meant "British Horsepower" to distinguish it
from the French's way of measuring horsepower in the beginning of the
century (I could be wrong though). I also think that HP is measured with
the motor by itself on a bench (which should make us happy, because the
ninetyfour/onetwentysomething horses on 8V/16V Scirocco's translate to
more humph over, say, heavier cars like the Paseo/Neon with their
questionable 100/onethirtysomething horses).
