Newbie... That's me

Well, Leigh.
First of all, I'll assume that you're from the UK as you've a GTX, if
not some of
this will be slightly irrelevant. Dealing with your questions back to

front (as I'm want to do), firstly the Jetex exhaust is certainly
very good, but as with all things, it might not suit everybody. So
far as increases in power, you can expect probably between 5 and 10
extra hp from this one. Bonuses (imho) include much meatier exhaust
tone, and boy does it look the biz from the back. Those twin polished

ports look absolutely tremendous from the back and give the rear end
some added presence.
So far as the engine goes. Well, this was a sort of lucky break on my

part. I had originally planned to go the whole hog and have a brand
new
2.0l block, but this engine came up rather cheaper. Basically, it
appears to be a standard DX, bored out to 1.9l and fitted with a
Schrick race cam. And you know that when Schrick call it a race cam,
it IS a race cam. I'd had talks with Brian Ricketts about having my
engine rebored and rebuilt, but he is loath to retune anything that's

done over about 70k miles. (Mine had done 116k). So far as costs go,
if it's less than 70k miles, you can change the cam and have it tuned

and polished to get about 136bhp for about £800-900 ***Please note,
all these prices and figures are from memory, so they may not be 100%

accurate*** However, over about 70k and things start getting
expensive. You will need a new (or rebuilt) block and this starts at
about £2,500. For this you will get about 142bhp. To be honest
though, if you're going to spend that kind of money, I'd go for a
G60 (if you can find one), although you'll have to still use the GTX

gearbox, as the G60 long throw won't fit.
Other alternatives are, well go the 16v route. Complete engine
systems can be had for about £500 (or less if you're lucky). However,

I don't like the lack bottom end torque compared to a rebored 8v.
My engine, as I said was a lucky break, as I happened to come across
an old MkII GTi that was a complete disaster area, apart from this
rather sweet revving engine. It sounded awful at idle, but this, I
found, is due to this *wild* Schrick cam (don't ask me the figures,
I'm not technical enough). A deal was struck and a week later £450
changed hands and I was driving home in a rather rickety 1981 GTi
(hand-painted sick green as it was I still managed to keep up with an

M3 on the way home.) The engine was swopped out by my local garage
and a week later I had possibly the (second) fastest Storm in the
country (Mike Trullock has a G60 engined Mk.I Storm). Call me
slightly potty, but the suspension and braking mods are still sadly
awaiting.
BTW I've also gone the darkened rear lense route. I assume they're
from US 16v cars as I needed to drill out the light enclosures as
described, but after that they were a perfect fit. They really do
look magnificent. Another highly recommended mod.
Final mod that I would recommend, is anti-coat hanger door lock
lifters. I tried a few before I found one that would fit, but Mk.4 VW

Polo ones work a treat, and look very smart and trendy too. Plus,
added bonus, they cost me 94p for the pair from my local dealer.
(What's this VW being cheap, never.....) Get them whilst you can...
