Yep, new handle is in order. Sciroccos seem to suffer from this, while
Rabbits do not.

There is another bearing on the front of your seat as well. It should take
care of this problem, and it's cheap. :)

This has happened to me '84 GTi, and all I can figure to do is to take up
some of the slack on the cable by twisting it a bit, and using a zip-tie.
E-mail if this doesn't make sense, I'll explain.

I read on a page that instead of using sound-deadner that they carry in
automotive audio stores, you can use a much cheaper alternative. Roof tar
ice-break (I'm sure there is a better name for it). It a material much like
the original tar boards they put in cars. It's original function is to
serve as an impermeable layer on the roofs of flat buildings. It is just as
good as the expensive stuff, just as flexible with a heat gun (recommended),
and the only concern I can see is the fumes. However you could spray a thin
coat of lacquer on top of it, and that should not be a problem. A 75 ft
roll costs about $40 or so.
If you need it, e-mail me and I'll give you the address that mentions the
sound-deadner.
