Cutting out Power Steering

OK I just heard something I never though of and I think something is
escaping me now but I'm sure one of you can bring me back.  Anyway someone
said they took the power steering belt off their 16v 'rocco to gain a tiny
power increase and because he (and I) like manual steering better.  It sucks
in a parking lot but on the road the feel is much more consistent.  My
question is does this affect the steering in a bad way at all?  Will it kill
the power steering unit?  I suppose cutting that and the AC might  add a
tiny bit on the low end but I doubt  any notice.  Thanks for the help,
