my shift bushings? I want to install a short shift kit..but I would
really like to be able to shift firmly and easily first.

I believe the plastic inside the bottom of the shifter is replaceable too! 
 Its kind of like a plastic ball and socket.  I'd do the bushings on the 
linkage and rebuild the plastic ball and socket on the bottom of the shift 
lever.  I know this can be done for an 82 Scirocco.
