instrument lites

I have a little problem with my instrument lites on my 85.  The one 
for the speedometer went out and I checked the Bentley manual for the 
procedure on replacing.  It seemed to be a simple procedure so I went 
to work.  HA!  I'm sure some of you already know it wasn't as 
advertised.  In fact I just put the screws back in and figured to get 
a few pointers from my 'rocco bros.

You're supposed to be able to tilt it front to remove the speedo 
cable and vacuum hose and wires.  I wasn't able to get close to 
getting my hand back there.  It only tilts a little before hitting 
the dash and the bottom seemed to be hanging up on something.  
On the U of W VW sight there's info from a guy with a GLI(?) that 
says to remove a lot more than the manual. 

I also figured it wasn't worth continuing to try since it appears the 
bulbs are yet another dealer item.  I figure to get all 3 new if it's 
gonna be this much hassle.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.
