Here in Germany the first letters are the region and then you have the two registration/inspection 'buttons' and then a couple more letters and numbers after that.  A common funny one around here is BIT:CH 69 or whatever numbers or BIT:ME and a couple numbers.  BTW, BIT is for Bitburg if your wondering.
