To upgrade the speakers and keep them in the stock slots in a mk2 you need
4x6's all around.  I think this is also true about the mk1's but I'm not
positive.  You may want to check on the depth of the replacements both above
and below the mountong plate.  I remember having trouble finding a speaker to
fit in the door trays of a friends 86 16v mk2.  Most speakers can be made to
fit without too much work and you can keep the outside of the speaker grill
looking stock.
