On my hatch an eye on the back of the lockcylinder for the hatch broke
off so that even when I pushed on the keyhole it wouldn't move the
mechanism to release the hatch. Possibly that is what happened to your
car also. If so, go to VW and you'll have to by the whole lock cylinder.
Cost me around $60 US. Hope that helps.
