Need help with one part of short shitf instalation

Ok heres my prob:
i have an 86 16v scirocco and im installing the techtonics one piece short
shift kit.  
I have removed the washer and nut on the bottom of the original linkage, and
also the circlip on the rod on the top.  My problem is that the original
linkage wont come off!!
I have pulled twisted etc and it will under no circumstances come off.  Now i
think the prob is that when i pull up on the factory linkage it pulls on the
little know attached to (on the bottom)
in other words the treads of the screw on the bottom of the factory linkage
is getting cought on somthing and its not somming up.  Please help!
