Thanks to all who replied regarding the problems I'm having with my
recently purchased 85 Scirocco. Lot's of useful suggestions I'll be
looking into......
OK....why I feel so stupid :
Turns out that my problem is overheating, not fuel related. In
getting to know my new car (I call it my "pocket rocket") I was so
intent on listening to the engine (not to mention watching traffic)
that I wasn't paying attention to my temp gauge close enough. If the
cute little red light had flashed, it would have helped :) Whenever
I got stuck in traffic, the temp would rise until it got high enough
to make it start cutting out. The reason it never happened in the
mornings is that it's cool enough here that the heat is needed on the
drive to work, and that was enough to keep it from getting too hot.
The solution (for now) is too turn the heat on when encountering
traffic. In the afternoons it makes it hot, but at least I'm no
longer pushing the car off to the side of the road :) I had the fuel
pump and filter replaced under the recall, but I'm not about to turn
off the heat and see the effect......I discovered the overheating a
few days before the work was done and realized that the problem was
not with the fuel system.
I need to sit down and read the FAQ about overheating and attack the
cooling system. I also need to get my hands on the Bentley manual.
Thanks again for everyone's input.
BTW, the VW dealer who did the recall work really sucks. They also
sell Mazda, Suzuki and 1 or 2 more makes. They ought to stick to 1
or 2 and do it right! I had called them to see if they could
pressure purge the injectors at the same time as they replaced the
pump and filter. The guy said that hey didn't have the equipment for
the job. Then he says that there's this really good VW repair shop
in Seattle that may be able to do it. So I asked the name of the
repair shop. He didn't even know that! I'm just glad the car still
runs after they touched it. Of course, since they worked on it the
exhaust is rattling somewhere under the passenger compartment.
If you want things done right.........
